Today we’d like to introduce you to David Servais.

SD Boatworks was founded in 2011 by Julie and David Servais. Specializing in rigging sailboats, the company has developed the niche of having the most experienced team of riggers and the best facilities. This has led to them rigging some of the highest end boats on the west coast, including racing boats and offshore cruising yachts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While day to day the work is hard, both mentally and physically, the long road has been pretty smooth for SD Boatworks. The company started out in a rigging trailer, but expanded after a couple of years to a fully outfitted rigging shop on Shelter Island. Each year brings new projects which all have their unique challenges. This pushes us to constantly improve our techniques and upgrade our facilities. This is all part of what makes this job so fun.

SD Boatworks – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SD Boatworks specializes is sailboat rigging. This includes rope “running rigging”, standing rigging that holds up the mast, winches, hydraulics installation and service, and composites work using carbon fiber to make custom parts for sailboats.

SD Boatworks has the largest inventory of Marlow Rope on the west coast and is a dealer for Harken as well as Spinlock who make some of the best sailboat hardware in the world.

One of the strengths of SD Boatworks is accurately quoting projects and coming in at or below the estimate. This is hard to find in the boating industry and has really set the company apart, generating repeat business from customers year after year.

The other specialty of SD Boatworks is in high-end race boats. They have rigging on just about every Grand Prix racer in San Diego, and regularly ship rope and other components worldwide to clients at the cutting edge of the sport. Having project managed multimillion dollar race boats from the design and build phase all the way through to the sailing campaign has given the company an in-depth knowledge of the total picture of how to make a boat win races.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
For us, as the owners of the company, the proudest moment happens every day when we get to go to work with our amazing staff at SD Boatworks. We are really honored to be surrounded by such a talented and amazing team of riggers.
